Benefits of quitting smoking
About 2 in 3 smokers want to stop and you’re four times more likely to quit if you use Nicotine Replacement Therapy (NRT) with specialist support. The benefits of stopping smoking include:
- Increased lung capacity to allow you to breathe more easily
- Decreased likelihood of getting serious smoking-related diseases like heart disease, cancers, heart attack, stroke or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD)
- Decreased stress levels
- Improved smell and taste
- Decreased skin aging
- Decreased staining of teeth, fresher breath and reduced risk of gum disease
- Reduced thinning of bones (osteoporosis)
- Increased fertility
What to expect when you quit
After 3 days breathing becomes easier and energy levels increase
After 1 month skin appearance and blood circulation improve
After 9 months cough, wheeze and breathing problems improve and lung function improves by up to 10%
After 1 year risk of heart attack falls to about half that of a smoker
After 10 years risk of lung cancer falls to about half that of a smoker
After 15 years risk of heart attack falls to the same level as a non-smoker
It can also save an individual over €4,000 per year if they smoke 20 per day
Treatment options available in our pharmacy
We offer nicotine replacement therapy (NRT) as a primary treatment for smoking cessation. NRT contains only nicotine and none of the damaging chemicals found in cigarettes. It helps you replace the nicotine you get from smoking to minimise cravings. It can also be used in pregnancy to assist in stopping smoking, therefore reducing health risks in an unborn baby.
We offer NRT in the form of:
- Patches
- Inhalators
- Gum
- Lozenges
- Mouth spray
Most nicotine products come in a variety of strengths and flavours to suit each individual.
