Frequently Asked Questions
Answers to common questions about vaccinations for your peace of mind.
Is it safe?
Yes. Seasonal flu vaccines used in Ireland are monitored and recommended by NIAC and provided via the HSE. Most people only have mild reactions (soreness, low-grade fever); serious allergic reactions are very rare. Pregnant women are routinely offered the inactivated vaccine because it protects both mother and baby. (HSE.ie)
Who is eligible/who gets it free in Ireland?
The HSE/Department of Health programme now offers publicly funded seasonal influenza vaccines for priority groups including children (2–17 years), people aged 60+, residents of long-stay care, healthcare workers, and people with certain long-term medical conditions — with the programme expanding in recent seasons. Speak to your Pharmacist to find out if you are eligible.
When should I get it?
Get vaccinated before flu is circulating heavily — ideally in autumn. Immunity develops in about 10–14 days and wanes over months, so annual vaccination each season is recommended. You can often get flu and COVID-19 seasonal vaccines at the same visit if eligible. (HSE.ie)
Where to get it and cost.
Eligible people can receive the vaccine through participating GPs, community clinics and many pharmacies. Some groups receive it free under the HSE programme; others may pay privately — check HSE guidance or ask your pharmacist for more information. (HSE.ie)
The flu vaccine trains the immune system to recognise the influenza strains expected each season. It’s given as an injection (inactivated) or, for children, sometimes a live nasal spray. It lowers your chance of catching flu and greatly reduces the risk of severe illness, hospitalisation and death — protecting you and those around you. In Ireland vaccines are recommended from 6 months up; priority groups (older adults, pregnant people, young children, healthcare workers and those with long-term conditions) may be eligible for public programmes. Vaccines used in Ireland are monitored by NIAC/HSE and are considered safe for most people; common side effects are mild and short-lived. Because flu viruses change, annual vaccination is advised.
Book ahead at a time that suits you. When you arrive, our pharmacist will ask a few health questions (allergies, recent illness, medications) and confirm your eligibility. The jab takes a minute, usually into the upper arm. You’ll get aftercare advice followed by a short 10–15 minute observation to make sure you’re OK. Bring a list of medications, and wear a short-sleeved top if possible.
